What Is WooCommerce?
WooCommerce is an open-source ecommerce plugin for WordPress, so the store lives inside a WordPress site on hosting the merchant chooses. The core plugin is free, while hosting, premium themes and many extensions are separate purchases. It manages products with variations, orders and checkout, and a REST API supports custom builds and integrations. WooPayments is Woo's own payment method, covering multiple currencies, subscriptions and in-person payments; it needs a WordPress.com account, an HTTPS site and a business registered in a supported country. Other gateways such as Stripe, PayPal and Square connect as extensions. WooCommerce Subscriptions, a paid extension, adds automatic renewals, failed-payment retries, renewal date synchronization and plan upgrades or downgrades. The iOS and Android apps manage orders and products, accept Tap to Pay on iPhone and Android, pair with card readers and offer point-of-sale tools such as barcode scanning and email receipts. Marketing and shipping connections include Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Google, Meta and ShipStation.
Best for: Businesses already running WordPress that want full control over their store, hosting and choice of payment gateway.
WooCommerce runs as a WordPress plugin, so product pages and editorial content share the same site's hosting and maintenance responsibilities. Store owners can alter checkout and business logic with extensions or code, but compatibility testing becomes their responsibility when WordPress, themes or payment extensions update. The core plugin and paid extensions should be budgeted separately.
