What Is Proton VPN?
Proton VPN is a VPN service from Proton, the Swiss company behind Proton Mail, with apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, Android, iOS and iPadOS, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire Stick, plus Chrome and Firefox extensions. Its apps are open source, Proton publishes the results of outside audits, and the company says Swiss law does not oblige it to keep connection logs. Secure Core sends traffic through hardened servers in Switzerland, Iceland or Sweden before it leaves for the destination country. NetShield blocks ads, trackers and malware domains through DNS filtering, Stealth makes VPN traffic look like ordinary traffic to get past censorship and VPN blocks, and Tor over VPN servers open .onion sites in a regular browser. Paid plans add split tunneling, which can include or exclude chosen apps and IP addresses. A free plan protects one device on servers in a limited set of countries, VPN Plus covers ten devices, and Proton Unlimited bundles Mail, Drive and Pass.
Best for: Privacy-minded individuals and small teams that want an audited, open-source VPN with protocols built for censored networks.
Proton VPN profiles can save a connection type, location and additional settings instead of requiring the user to rebuild a routing choice each time. Secure Core sends eligible paid-plan traffic through a middle country before its exit server. This privacy architecture differs from a rotating residential proxy, where changing the public-facing IP is the primary job.
