Buffer vs Later: Per-Channel Scheduling or Visual Planning

Buffer charges by connected channel and keeps a free plan for up to three channels, so cost follows the number of accounts you run. It publishes to a wide spread of networks, including X, Mastodon, Bluesky, Threads and Google Business Profiles, and its Community inbox answers comments on most of them. Later sells plans built on social sets, each holding a group of profiles, with monthly post caps on the lower tiers. Its strength is visual planning: a drag-and-drop calendar, an Instagram grid preview and Link in Bio pages that turn a feed into clickable links. Influencer programs are a separate Later offering.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How many posts can I schedule on each?⌄

Buffer's free plan holds 10 scheduled posts per channel at a time, refilled as they publish, and its paid plans remove the limit. Later caps Starter at 30 posts per profile each month and Growth at 180, while Scale has no cap. Heavy posting schedules on Later therefore point toward the higher tiers.

Which works better for an agency with many client accounts?⌄

Buffer charges for each channel, and channels beyond the first 10 cost less each, so a growing roster scales one account at a time. Later groups profiles into social sets: Starter has one set of eight profiles, Growth two sets and Scale six sets of eight, with one, two and four users respectively.

Is there a free plan or a trial?⌄

Buffer has both: a free plan for up to three channels and one user, plus a 14-day trial of its paid plans. Later has no free plan but offers a 14-day free trial on Starter, Growth and Scale, and lets you choose monthly or yearly billing.

    Do both have mobile apps?⌄

Yes. Later's pricing page lists its iOS and Android app on all three plans for managing channels away from a desk. Buffer also offers iOS and Android apps next to its web app, so both can be run from a phone.
