GoDaddy vs Namecheap: Auctions, DNS and WordPress Hosting

GoDaddy and Namecheap both register domains, manage DNS and sell hosting, but their extras point in different directions. GoDaddy runs GoDaddy Auctions, where expired GoDaddy domains are listed for bidding about 26 days after expiry, and it adds Airo, an AI assistant for creating branding and website assets after a domain purchase. Namecheap leans toward infrastructure. PremiumDNS adds anycast DNS with DDoS protection for domains registered at any registrar, EasyWP hosts WordPress only, on cloud resources that customers don't share, and VPS and dedicated servers sit in the same account.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still renew a GoDaddy domain after it appears in GoDaddy Auctions?⌄

Sometimes. GoDaddy's timeline lets the registrant renew manually from day 26 to 29 after expiry even with a bid on the name. From day 30 to 36 renewal is blocked if there is an active bid, and a name moved to Final Closeout on day 37 can be renewed until someone buys it.

Does Namecheap PremiumDNS work for a domain registered elsewhere?⌄

Yes. Namecheap says PremiumDNS works with any domain at any registrar. You buy it for that domain, recreate the records in the Advanced DNS tab and point the domain to Namecheap's PremiumDNS nameservers. Each subscription is tied to one domain and can't be switched to a different one later.

How is EasyWP different from Namecheap's shared hosting?⌄

EasyWP is built only for WordPress: setup is quick, Namecheap manages the server settings and caching is built in. The trade-off is no cPanel, no cron jobs and no email management in its panel, all of which shared hosting provides. Sites running other software or custom scripts belong on shared hosting or a VPS.

How does GoDaddy handle WordPress core updates on managed hosting?⌄

Updates are automatic. GoDaddy usually ships minor security and maintenance releases about seven days after WordPress publishes them, and waits 2 to 4 weeks before deploying a major release so plugin and theme developers can catch up. On its newer platform, users can also pick from a list of stable versions.
