What Is Tableau?

Tableau is a visual analytics platform built around drag-and-drop dashboard authoring. Analysts build workbooks in Tableau Desktop, which installs on Windows and macOS, or author in the browser, then publish to Tableau Cloud (hosted) or Tableau Server (self-managed). Tableau Prep Builder cleans, reshapes, unions and joins data in reusable flows that can be run manually, from the command line or on a schedule. Tableau Pulse, available on Tableau Cloud, works from a metrics layer: a team defines a metric once, and Pulse describes trends, drivers and outliers in plain language, sends digests by email, Slack or Microsoft Teams, and alerts people when a metric crosses a threshold. Access is licensed by role: Creator includes Desktop and Prep Builder, Explorer adds browser-based authoring on top of viewing, and Viewer covers interacting with published dashboards, commenting, subscriptions and Tableau Mobile. It fits organizations where a few analysts serve many dashboard consumers.

Best for: Organizations with dedicated analysts who publish dashboards and metrics for a much larger group of business viewers.

Tableau is a general analytics and visualization environment, not a turnkey website measurement collector. Its value depends on connecting appropriate data sources and modeling them for exploration; organizations that already have a warehouse can use it to blend operational and marketing evidence that a web traffic tool cannot collect by itself.

Tableau Pros and Cons

What We Like

  • Role-based licenses separate Creators, browser-based Explorers and view-only users.
  • Prep Builder handles joins, unions and cleaning in visual, reusable flows.
  • Pulse sends metric digests and threshold alerts by email, Slack or Microsoft Teams.
  • Deploy as hosted Tableau Cloud or self-managed Tableau Server.
  • Viewer licenses include Tableau Mobile, comments and data-driven alerts.

What Could Be Better

  • Tableau Pulse is available on Tableau Cloud only, not Tableau Server.
  • Desktop and Prep Builder install on Windows and macOS only, with no Linux build.
  • Scheduling Prep flows with Prep Conductor needs the Data Management add-on.
  • No free plan is offered.
