#3 of 10 in SMS Marketing by Overall Score

What Is Twilio?

Twilio is a cloud communications platform that developers use through REST APIs, SDKs and quickstarts. Programmable Messaging sends and receives SMS, MMS, RCS and WhatsApp messages through one API, with Facebook Messenger in public beta. Messaging Services manage senders at scale, and a content template builder stores reusable messages, including RCS cards and carousels. The Conversations product keeps cross-channel threads across voice, SMS, WhatsApp, RCS and chat, and the open-source Agent Connect framework links AI agents to it. The wider catalog includes the Verify API for one-time passcodes, Programmable Voice, the Flex contact center and SendGrid email. Messaging is pay-as-you-go by message segment, with carrier fees and Meta template fees for WhatsApp added on, automatic volume discounts, and committed-use contracts for large senders. Sending to US numbers from a 10DLC number requires A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration, and toll-free numbers need verification.

Best for: Engineering teams that want to build text and chat messaging into their own product or backend systems.

Twilio exposes communications primitives through APIs, so developers decide when their own application sends or receives a message. Delivery status arrives through callbacks, and phone number or sender configuration is managed separately from campaign content. Usage pricing and regulatory registration need to be considered before estimating the cost of a production workflow.

    Twilio Pros and Cons

    What We Like

    • One Messaging API covers SMS, MMS, RCS and WhatsApp with shared sender management.
    • Pay-as-you-go messaging with automatic volume discounts and committed-use contracts for large senders.
    • RCS support adds branded senders and rich content such as cards and carousels.
    • Agent Connect, an open-source framework, links AI agents to Twilio Conversations.
    • Teams using Verify only for passcode texts are exempt from A2P 10DLC registration.

    What Could Be Better

    • US application messaging over 10DLC numbers requires brand and campaign registration first.
    • Carrier fees, and Meta template fees on WhatsApp, are charged on top of message rates.
    • Facebook Messenger support is still in public beta.
    • Conversations requires the new Twilio Console and a live production channel.
