Canva vs Figma: Marketing Assets or Product Design Files

Canva is aimed at people producing marketing material without a design background: templates, Brand Kits, Magic Resize for reformatting a design across channels, and video editing. Figma is built for product teams designing interfaces, with interactive prototypes, shared component and variable libraries, and Dev Mode for handing specs and code snippets to engineers. The two are moving closer. Figma Buzz lets brand teams publish templates for social posts and ads, and Canva's Connect APIs autofill brand templates from outside data. Prototyping and developer handoff remain Figma territory, while Canva covers a wider range of everyday content.

        Frequently Asked Questions

Can marketers work in Figma instead of Canva?⌄

Figma Buzz is aimed at that group: brand designers publish templates and marketers fill them in, including bulk creation from spreadsheets. Seat type matters. Figma's pricing page gives Collab seats full use of Buzz, FigJam and Slides but only view and comment access in Figma Design, which needs a Full seat.

Does Canva have anything like Figma's Dev Mode?⌄

Not for the same purpose. Canva's developer offering is its Connect APIs, which let other software create, autofill and export Canva designs. Dev Mode serves engineers building a product from a design, with an inspect panel, generated code snippets, ready-for-dev status and Code Connect for linking design-system code.

Do Canva and Figma have free plans?⌄

Both do. Canva also offers a free trial of its paid tier, and Figma's free Starter plan includes unlimited drafts with limited access to its products. Features such as Canva's Magic Resize and Brand Templates, or Figma's team libraries and Dev Mode, sit on paid plans.

How does Canva keep non-designers on brand?⌄

Admins attach Brand Kits to folders and can switch on controls that limit designs to brand colors and fonts or require approval before publishing. Brand Template locks can fix an element completely or lock only its position, and they must be set before the template is published.
