Ever wondered what's helping your competitors get ahead? It's a useful way to see what's working for others in your industry and where you might be falling behind.

Whether you're checking out a new market or trying to improve your current results, these tools can help you figure out where to focus your efforts next.

Best Competitor Analysis Tools

SEO competitor analysis can mean very different things: finding domains that rank for the same queries, uncovering keyword gaps, studying the pages that attract organic traffic, or comparing backlink profiles. Some tools begin with a known rival; others help discover competitors you may not have considered. They're grouped by job, not ranked.

    Semrush

    Market Signal 81

#1 of 10 in Competitor Analysis

Semrush combines domain-level and keyword-level competitor research. Organic Rankings shows a rival's ranking keywords, pages, SERP features, and organic competitors, while Domain Overview and Keyword Gap add side-by-side context; teams can move from a broad domain comparison into the exact queries and pages behind a visibility difference without leaving the same research environment.

    • Organic Rankings
    • Domain Overview
    • Keyword Gap
    • Backlink Gap
    Best for
Teams that compare competitors across keywords, pages, backlinks, and broader search visibility.
    Consider
Semrush spreads competitive research across several tools, so analysts need to select the appropriate report; one consolidated competitor table cannot answer every question.
  2. Ahrefs logo

    Page and backlink discovery

    Ahrefs

    Overall Score76/100
    4.0Editor Rating
    Market Signal 77

#2 of 10 in Competitor Analysis

Ahrefs Site Explorer is useful when competitor analysis starts from a domain or URL. Choose it when deciding whether a competitor wins through topic coverage, links, or both. It exposes organic keywords, top pages, backlinks, referring domains, and historical changes, letting teams trace both the search demand and link support behind competing content.

    • Site Explorer
    • Top pages
    • Organic keywords
    • Referring domains
    Best for
SEO teams seeking to connect competitor rankings with page-level backlink evidence.
    Consider
Ahrefs metrics come from its own search and link indexes, so compare values consistently within Ahrefs and avoid direct comparisons with another vendor's proprietary metrics.
  3. SpyFu logo

    For SEO and PPC overlap

    SpyFu

    Overall Score66/100
    3.9Editor Rating
    Market Signal 59

#3 of 10 in Competitor Analysis

SpyFu treats competitors as domains that share organic rankings or paid keywords, which can uncover rivals beyond the companies a team already knows. Its SEO and PPC research areas both include competitor views, making it useful when organic and paid search strategies overlap. Analysts can compare shared keywords and identify domains entering or leaving the competitive set.

    • SEO Competitors
    • PPC Competitors
    • Shared keywords
    • Competitor charts
    Best for
Search marketers who want competitor discovery across both organic and paid search.
    Consider
SpyFu's core competitive view is search-focused, so it does not replace broader audience, social, or full-channel market intelligence.
  4. SE Ranking logo

    SE Ranking

    Overall Score64/100
    3.3Editor Rating
    Market Signal 70

#5 of 10 in Competitor Analysis

SE Ranking's competitor analysis tools let users investigate a rival's organic keywords, traffic estimates, ranking pages, and paid-search activity, then connect those findings with tracked projects. This is useful for agencies that want research to feed ongoing monitoring and stay current beyond a one-time snapshot; domain analysis can also surface competitors based on shared search visibility.

    • Competitive Research
    • Organic keyword analysis
    • Top pages
    • Competitor discovery
    Best for
Agencies and growing teams that want research and ongoing project tracking in one system.
    Consider
Traffic and visibility figures are modeled estimates, so they are better for comparative research than for replacing a competitor's first-party analytics.
  5. Mangools logo

    Quick SERP comparisons

    Mangools

    Overall Score57/100
    3.2Editor Rating
    Market Signal 58

#7 of 10 in Competitor Analysis

Mangools combines SERPChecker, KWFinder, and SiteProfiler for lighter competitor research. SERPChecker shows the pages competing for a target query, while SiteProfiler summarizes domain and backlink information and KWFinder provides keyword context. The workflow is useful when a marketer needs to inspect a specific SERP and the domains inside it without building a large competitive-intelligence project.

    • SERPChecker
    • SiteProfiler
    • KWFinder
    • SERP metrics
    Best for
Smaller SEO teams doing focused query-by-query competitor research.
    Consider
The toolset emphasizes search and link snapshots, with limited focus on continuous monitoring of broad market or audience behavior.

How to choose

  • Decide whether your main question is about shared keywords, competing pages, backlink gaps, or broader market traffic.
  • Use page-level reports when you need to understand which individual competitor URLs drive visibility alongside domain totals.
  • Treat modeled traffic and authority metrics as comparative indicators, and keep comparisons within the same data provider.

How to check a competitor's SEO

Start by finding out who you're really up against in search. It's often not the company you'd call your rival. It's whoever ranks for the queries you want. Enter your domain in Semrush or SE Ranking and you'll get a list of the sites that compete with you most often in the results.

Then put your site and a competitor's next to each other. Compare estimated organic traffic, how many keywords each site ranks for and which pages bring in most of the visits. Ahrefs shows this in its Top pages report, and Mangools gives a quicker snapshot in SiteProfiler. Traffic figures are estimates, so use them to compare sites inside one tool, not as real visit counts.

To track a competitor's rankings over time, add their domain to the rank tracking project you already run for your own keywords. Semrush and SE Ranking both let you do this. When a rival jumps ahead on a query, check whether they published a new page or picked up new backlinks.

Last, look for gaps. A keyword gap report lists queries a competitor ranks for that you don't, and a backlink gap report does the same for linking sites. If you also run paid search, SpyFu shows the keywords a rival bids on right next to the ones they rank for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who counts as an SEO competitor?⌄

An SEO competitor is any domain competing for the same search demand, even if it sells a different product or is not a direct business rival. Search tools often discover competitors by measuring shared ranking keywords instead of relying on a manually entered list.

What should I look for in a competitor's top pages?⌄

Look at the queries those pages rank for, the intent they satisfy, how much of the competitor's visibility they represent, their backlink support, and whether your site has an equivalent page. The goal is to identify repeatable gaps, not simply copy a page.

Do any of the tools listed under Competitor Analysis have a free plan?⌄

Yes, Semrush, Ahrefs and SpyFu all offer a free plan. Free tiers usually come with usage limits, so check whether they cover your volume before relying on them long-term.

Which tool listed under Competitor Analysis has the lowest starting price?⌄

Among the tools listed here whose main product is in this category and whose pricing we've verified, Ahrefs has the lowest listed starting price: $29/mo. Starting price isn't the whole picture, so check what's included at that tier before deciding.
