Make (formerly Integromat) vs n8n: Cloud Credits or Self-Hosting

Make and n8n both build automations on a visual canvas, but they meter and host them differently. Make runs as a hosted service billed in credits, where most actions in a scenario use one credit, and it says it connects to more than 3,500 apps. n8n counts a whole workflow run as one execution however many steps it has, and its Community Edition can be self-hosted with Docker on your own servers. n8n also leans further into code, with JavaScript and Python steps, while Make focuses on routers, visual data mapping and error handlers that can retry, skip or roll back work.

            Frequently Asked Questions

            Can I self-host Make the way I can self-host n8n?⌄

The Make pages we reviewed describe no self-hosted edition. Enterprise customers can install an on-premise agent that lets scenarios reach applications and databases on a local network without firewall changes. n8n can run entirely on your own servers, on-premises or in a private cloud, using Docker Compose or a one-line setup.

How does a long workflow count against usage on each?⌄

On Make, each action that runs uses credits, usually one apiece, so a scenario with many steps draws down more credits on every run. On n8n, a run of the whole workflow is one execution whatever the step count, and plans differ by the number of executions and concurrent runs they allow.

Is there a free way to start?⌄

Make has a free plan, which is the way to try it since it does not offer a free trial. n8n's Community Edition is free to self-host, and its cloud trial needs no credit card. Note that n8n's Business plan is self-hosted only, while Starter and Pro are hosted by n8n.

Can n8n Cloud use any library in code steps?⌄

No. On n8n Cloud, JavaScript in the Code node can use only the crypto and moment modules, and Python cannot import libraries. Self-hosted instances can import built-in and external npm modules, and allowlisted Python modules. Code steps also can't access the file system or make HTTP requests, which dedicated nodes handle instead.
