What Is Substack?
Substack is a publishing platform where writers send posts as email newsletters, publish the same posts on the web and, if they choose, charge readers through paid subscriptions. It also hosts podcasts with RSS distribution to Apple Podcasts and Spotify and private feeds for paying subscribers, plus native video and livestreams with real-time chat. Notes is a short-form social feed inside the Substack network, Chat gives subscribers discussion threads, and recommendations help readers find other publications. Writers can import posts and subscribers from WordPress, Ghost, Medium, Mailchimp and other platforms, connect a custom domain and export their subscriber list as a CSV. Publishing costs nothing; paid subscriptions run through Stripe, and Substack keeps a share of subscription revenue. Readers and writers use it on the web and in iOS and Android apps.
Best for: Independent writers and podcasters who want to publish free and paid work and grow through Substack's reader network.
Substack combines publishing, email distribution, subscriptions, and network discovery in one creator-facing system. Writers retain access to their subscriber list and can mix free and paid posts with Notes, chats, audio, or live video, making the product closer to a publishing platform than a conventional marketing-automation database.
