What Is Asana?
Asana organizes work as tasks inside projects, with a Timeline view for Gantt-style scheduling. Rules automate routine steps when a trigger fires, such as assigning or moving a task, and support conditions, branching and manual triggers; the workflow builder packages intake, rules and project structure into a repeatable process. From the Advanced plan up, Portfolios group projects for status reporting, Goals link company, team and individual objectives to the projects and tasks behind them and update as that work is completed, and workload views show who has capacity. Approvals, proofing, time tracking and forms with branching logic sit on the same tier. AI Studio adds no-code AI steps to workflows. Asana runs on the web and on iOS and Android, offers an API, and connects with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Salesforce, Jira, GitHub, Zoom and Adobe Creative Cloud. Plans run Personal, Starter, Advanced, Enterprise and Enterprise+.
Best for: Cross-functional teams, such as marketing and operations groups, that want projects, objectives and capacity tracked in one shared workspace.
Asana can use a custom field value as a trigger to move a task between project sections or assign responsibility to a specified colleague. Those rules suit processes with clear handoffs, such as creative briefs moving from intake through review. Custom fields are not part of the free plan, so the intended workflow should be checked against the chosen tier before rollout.
